Data Centre Design

Our Mechanical Engineers can provide Detailed Cooling Effectiveness and Cooling efficiency audits and report back with improvement recommendations.

Our Data Center MEP Infrastructure Design Services are focused on delivering reliable, scalable, and energy-efficient solutions that meet the unique needs of each data center. We follow a structured, step-by-step process to ensure that all critical infrastructure systems, from power distribution to cooling, are designed with maximum reliability and operational efficiency in mind.

Requirements Gathering and Preliminary Assessment

The first step in our design process is gathering client requirements and performing a preliminary site assessment. This involves understanding the client’s specific needs, such as performance expectations, capacity planning, and future scalability. We also conduct a detailed assessment of the existing site conditions, including its geographic and environmental factors, while performing essential load calculations to determine the power and cooling needs of the data center.

Conceptual Design Development

Our team develops a high-level conceptual design that outlines the overall structure of the power systems, including utility feeds, UPS systems, backup generators, and power distribution units. Cooling strategies are formulated to ensure optimal temperature control using methods such as hot/cold aisle containment and advanced cooling technologies. We also engage in space planning to allocate sufficient room for MEP systems, ensuring room for future expansion and maintenance access.

Detailed Electrical Design

In this phase, we design the electrical power distribution system, including components such as transformers, switchgear, and PDUs, while ensuring redundancy through N+1 or 2N configurations. We design the UPS and backup generator systems to guarantee uninterrupted power in case of outages. Additionally, power quality management systems are incorporated to monitor voltage stability and protect sensitive equipment from electrical surges.

Detailed Mechanical Design

Our mechanical design focuses on developing effective HVAC systems for heating, ventilation, and cooling. We design solutions such as CRAC (Computer Room Air Conditioning) units, chillers, and air handling units (AHUs) to manage airflow and temperature. Hot/cold aisle containment and other airflow management strategies are deployed to optimize energy use. We also integrate fire protection systems, including fire detection and suppression systems, to ensure the safety of the equipment without causing harm during fire suppression.

Plumbing Design

Our plumbing design services ensure proper water supply and drainage for chilled water-cooling systems, including detailed piping layouts and water treatment systems. We incorporate leak detection systems to prevent damage from potential water leaks, ensuring that the cooling systems operate effectively and safely.

Schematic Design

In the schematic design phase, we create detailed system schematics, including electrical one-line diagrams, mechanical system layouts, and piping configurations. These schematics provide a comprehensive overview of how all MEP systems will integrate and function. This phase ensures that all systems are fully coordinated and optimized for the data center’s performance, scalability, and future-proofing needs.

Redundancy and Reliability Planning

Redundancy is a key focus for ensuring continuous operation. We design dual utility feeds, redundant UPS systems, and backup generators to ensure that power is always available. Additionally, we design redundant cooling systems (N+1 or 2N) to guarantee temperature control under all conditions. Automated failover mechanisms are included to switch systems to backup resources seamlessly in case of any failures.

Integration of Monitoring and Control Systems

We integrate advanced Building Management Systems (BMS) and Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) tools to monitor all critical mechanical and electrical systems in real-time. These systems provide comprehensive insights into power usage, temperature, humidity, and system health, allowing for proactive management and 24/7 control.

Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Design

CNS Consulting emphasizes energy efficiency in our MEP infrastructure designs, incorporating low-power cooling technologies, energy recovery systems, and green energy integration where possible. Our goal is to optimize Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), reducing operational costs while ensuring the data center adheres to environmental sustainability standards.

Compliance and Standards Adherence

Throughout the design process, CNS Consulting ensures that all MEP systems comply with industry standards, including Uptime Institute Tier certifications and ASHRAE standards for cooling. We also ensure that our designs meet all local regulatory requirements, fire codes, and electrical safety standards, ensuring that both the facility and personnel are protected.

Final Design Review and Documentation

Before moving to the construction phase, we conduct a final design review, often involving third-party validation, to ensure that all systems meet performance and reliability criteria. We provide complete as-built documentation, including electrical diagrams, mechanical schematics, and system configurations, essential for installation, maintenance, and future upgrades.

Through these steps, CNS Consulting delivers resilient, high-performance MEP infrastructure designs that guarantee reliable operations for mission-critical data centers.
